Các nhà khảo cổ phát hiện hơn 200 quả trứng hóa thạch của loài thằn lằn bay cổ đại Hamipterus tianshanensis ở phía Bắc của Trung Quốc với niên đại lên tới 120 triệu năm tuổi.


Theo Guardian, khu vực phát hiện những quả trứng thuộc khu tự trị Tân Cương, Trung Quốc. Với số lượng không tưởng lên tới 215 quả trong trạng thái bảo quản tốt giúp các nhà khoa học kết luận con non của chúng khi mới sinh chưa biết bay ngay và cần bố mẹ chăm sóc.

Các bằng chứng trước đây về sự sinh sản của loài thằn lằn bay còn khá thiếu hụt, chỉ giới hạn trong một số rất ít trứng tìm được tại Achentina và Trung Quốc vào năm 2004.

Thằn lằn bay Hamipterus tianshanensis sống cách đây 120 triệu năm, trong kỷ Phấn Trắng. Thức ăn chủ yếu của chúng là cá. Con trưởng thành có một chiếc mào trên đầu, hộp sọ khá dài, hàm răng sắc nhọn và sải cánh dài đến 3,5 mét.

Trước đó, không hề có bằng chứng nào cho thấy loài thằn lằn này đẻ trứng. Nhưng phát hiện mới này – một phát hiện không chỉ tìm thấy trứng mà còn có cả xương của con trưởng thành – đã vẽ lên một bức tranh sinh động về hoạt động làm tổ của chúng.

Trên các mẫu phôi, các nhà khoa học có thể quan sát thấy các cấu trúc hỗ trợ cho các cơ ngực – yếu tố rất quan trọng đối với khả năng bay lượn – rõ ràng còn kém phát triển. Từ đó, các nhà khoa học đã suy luận rằng khi mới nở ra, những con non còn chưa có khả năng bay. Do đó, các con thằn lằn mới nở cần sự chăm sóc và quan tâm của bố mẹ.

Ở một số loài chim, con non biết bay ngay khi chui ra khỏi trứng, trong khi số khác sẽ cần thời gian dài hơn sống dưới sự chăm sóc của bố mẹ. Hamipterus tianshanensis non có thể đi bộ nhưng chưa biết bay ngay.

Mặc dù loài thằn lằn bay này có thể phải chăm sóc con non, nhưng chúng cũng không ấp trứng giống như loài chim, mà lại dựa vào đất để giữ ấm cho trứng.

Đây là một phát hiện rất có giá trị và hiếm gặp bởi trứng vỏ mềm rất khó chuyển thành hóa thạch trong điều kiện thông thường.
