Vũ khí sinh học là 1 trong những loại vũ khí nguy hiểm và khó chống đỡ hàng đầu thế giới hiện nay. Nhưng thực chất, không phải ai cũng nhận ra rằng vũ khí sinh học là 1 trong những loại vũ khí nguyên thủy nhất, đơn thuần nhất, cổ xưa nhất nhưng cũng hiện đại nhất của lịch sử nhân loại.
Tại sao chúng ta lại phải khẳng định cái điều ấy nhỉ?
Đầu tiên, chúng ta cần phải hiểu định nghĩa “vũ khí sinh học” là gì? Vũ khí sinh học là một dạng vũ khí hủy diệt hàng loạt dựa vào đặc tính gây bệnh hay truyền bệnh của các vi sinh vật như vi trùng, vi khuẩn; hoặc các độc tố do một số vi trùng tiết ra để gây mầm bệnh hay cái chết cho con người, cho động vật hoặc cây trồng, phá hoại mùa màng, gây ô nhiễm môi trường sinh thái.
Quả thật, vũ khí sinh học đúng là có thể bắt nguồn từ những điều đơn giản nhất. Lấy một ví dụ đơn giản, đó là việc bạn hồi bé “chẳng may” chơi với một đứa bạn người đầy nốt thủy đậu, hay nó cố ý lại gần rồi đụng chạm vào bạn chẳng bạn, khiến bạn bị lây thủy bệnh rồi phải chữa và tiêm phòng bệnh các kiểu. Về mặt cơ bản, bạn hoàn toàn có thể coi đó như là một ví dụ ở mức độ thấp của vũ khí sinh học.
Theo các nhà sử học, vũ khí và kĩ thuật chiến tranh sinh học không phải mới được áp dụng ở thời hiện đại, mà vốn thực chất đã được lần đầu sử dụng bởi người Hittite từ vài ngàn năm trước. Với tham vọng mở rộng vương quốc của mình, đế chế Hittite đã từng chiếm lĩnh được phần lãnh thổ trải dài từ Thổ Nhĩ Kì cho tới tận Syria ngày nay.
Khác với mấy đế chế toàn sử dụng bạo lực vai u thịt bắp, đầu rơi máu chảy, người Hittite sử dụng chiến thuật thú vị và thâm thúy hơn nhiều. Mỗi khi muốn đánh chiếm một thành phố nào đó, họ sẽ gửi tới nơi đó những con cừu và lừa bị bệnh để lan truyền loại bệnh gọi là “bệnh dịch Hittite”. Sau đó, họ sẽ kiên nhẫn chờ khoảng vài năm để lực lượng của quân địch suy giảm rồi mới tấn công và chiếm đóng.
Mặc thù, thực tế thì kế hoạch này sẽ rất là sáng suốt nếu chính quân đội Hittite không bị nhiễm chính bệnh dịch này. Đó chính là bệnh dịch hạch – một trong những mầm bệnh đáng sợ nhất thế giới cổ đại, và đó cũng là sự khởi đầu cho phong trào áp dụng những dạng chiến tranh hóa học bẩn thỉu khác, khi chúng lập tức được dùng phổ biến hơn trong vài thế kỷ sau đó.
Trong cuốn sách kể về tiểu sử của tướng Hannibal – một vị tướng của thành bang Carthago, nhà sử học người La Mã cổ đại Cornelius Nepos đã kể rằng vị tướng này đã cho ném những chiếc lọ chứa rắn độc lên tàu quân Pergamon trong một trận thủy chiến.
Vào khoảng thế kỷ thứ 2, cư dân thành Hatra đã cố thủ trước quân xâm lược La Mã bằng cách sử dụng vũ khí sinh học: ném ra những bình đất nung chứa đầy bọ cạp. Ngoài ra, người trung cổ cũng biết sử dụng các loại nấm gây ảo giác hay thậm chí là xác đang bị phân hủy để lây nhiễm vi trùng.
Nhưng có lẽ, cuộc chiến tranh sinh học khủng nhất, kinh hoàng nhất chính là trận công thành Kaffa của quân Tatar vào năm 1346. Sau khi bị thiệt hại nặng nề bởi bệnh dịch hạch, người Tatar đã dùng máy bắn đá ném xác quân mình qua tường thành vào trong thành phố. Lý do họ làm vậy là bởi họ tin rằng mùi của tử thi sẽ khiến cho nhuệ khí của quân phòng thủ bên địch bị giảm sút.
Tuy nhiên, mọi việc không chỉ đơn giản như thế. Tác dụng chính của phương thức này đó là: bệnh dịch hạch bị lan rộng. Người Kaffa phải bỏ trốn khỏi thành phố quê nhà, mang theo căn bệnh đi tứ xứ. Theo nhiều nhà sử học, đây chính là cái cách mà Cái Chết Đen – bệnh than cấp tính lan tới tận châu Âu và giết chết 1/3 dân cư tại đây. Về mặt cơ bản, dân Tatar đã từng có thể hủy diệt cả một lục địa?
Nhìn chung, vũ khí sinh học đưa đến những hậu quả không thể lường trước được, tùy thuộc vào khả năng lan truyền của chúng trong cơ thể động vật hay cây trồng. Tuy nhiên, những mầm gây bệnh đó có thể biến mất rất nhanh hoặc gây nên những bệnh dịch không thể kiểm soát được hoặc tác động ngược chiều.
Vì thế, nếu không nắm rõ chúng mà dùng chúng, quân đội sử dụng cũng có thể sẽ phải gánh chịu hậu quả. Việc nắm rõ và kiểm soát mầm gây bệnh, cũng như “căn” đúng thời gian sử dụng là vô cùng cần thiết.
